Monday Morning Memo

Our last music program of the school year was performed with skill and joy by our second grade students on Thursday.  They were delightful and entertaining for an adoring audience.  Thanks to Mrs. Haskamp for her guidance and teaching of these talented youngsters.

The last week of school and the energy is palpable!  This week Baccalaureate is on Wednesday night at 7:00 in the church, and Graduation is on Friday at 1:00 in the north wing multipurpose room.  Please know that you and your family are welcome to join us for either or both of these special events that honor our graduates, many of whom have been with us for twelve years!

The Metropolitan Private School League voted last month to eliminate fifth grade sports from the middle school athletic program.  Several of the schools had discontinued participation with their fifth graders, leaving only St. Paul’s, Pembroke Hill and Heritage Christian offering participation to fifth graders.  Although the council tried to continue a program for fifth graders with just three schools, it had become apparent that there were not enough teams to create a competitive league.  This means that our students and all others in this league will not begin competing in school-sponsored teams until the sixth grade.  We will continue to offer tennis, which we control individually, and lacrosse, which is part of the KC Metro Lacrosse Association, to our fifth graders.  If you have questions or concerns about this decision, please contact Randy Kurt, our Athletic Director and our representative to this league at rkurt@speds.org.  We regret this change of events and hope students will remain active in their YMCA and other sponsored leagues.

SPIN Pizza generously donated a "Design Your Own Pizza" item to the St. Paul's Auction this year.  The Kerrigan Family won the item, and have worked with SPIN to design a "St. Paul's Graduation Special" of four pizzas that will be on sale Monday, May 21 through Sunday, May 27.  During the week of graduation, St. Paul's School will receive 15% of the sales of the four Graduation Pizzas when you show the special coupon.  It's a great way to celebrate the end of school, eat great pizza, and support St. Paul's – all at the same time!"  Here is the link to the coupon:  http://www.speds.org/file/download/Graduation_Special.pdf

Back by popular demand, Cristi Williams and Lynnette Rempel will be offering a four-session Love and Logic class just for St. Paul’s parents and guardians. We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity as Love and Logic strategies and techniques are proven to help deal with even the most frustrating parenting issues.  Please RSVP directly to Mrs. van Thullenar at Lvan@speds.org no later than Friday, June 8th. At this time, please indicate if you will be needing childcare and if so, the ages of your children. Upon registration with Mrs. van Thullenar, we will bill you through your student account for the $55.00 class fee.
We hope to see you there!

Ruth Farkas and Cristi Williams have officially been accepted to present at the ISACS Annual Conference in November. They will be presenting on the use of portfolios for documenting learning and development in the early childhood classroom.  They will join Ted van Thullenar who will also be presenting at this conference!

Girls on the Run, a program to promote healthy lifestyle choices for girls, will begin this Fall.   It will be offered for 7th and 8th grade students and will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 – 5:00 for nine weeks, beginning the week after Labor Day.  Girls will be active learners as they pursue good exercise and eating choices, among other important things for them to know at this age.  Click here to watch the video about this program and contact Melinda Sih at melindasih@gmail.com for more details and to sign up.

I have written a “Farewell to the School Year and Hello to Summer” article for the newsletter and will post on the website a recap of the year that I did for the Board of Trustees.  But, just in case you don’t get around to reading those, I want to tell you again what a pleasure it is to work with your bright, energetic, loving, entertaining, hardworking, talented children.  We hope to see many of them in our summer program.  For those of you who will not be returning next year -- from our graduates to those who are leaving for other reasons – we wish you Godspeed and hope you’ll return often to visit.  Thank you for entrusting your children to us!  Have a very happy summer break!
