Monday Morning Memo

Apologies to Courtney O’Farrell  who served as co-chair with Katie Moreland for the Family Fun Fest.  The two worked hand-in-hand to provide our fun festival and I sincerely apologize for omitting Courtney’s name from  last week’s kudos.

Carpool clarification:  The opening from Walnut St. is meant to be an exit only in the mornings, to allow those wanting to turn left onto Main St. to exit and go to 43rd St. where there is a light, allowing that left turn.  However, it is being used as an entrance by some parents, causing traffic to get stalled when these drivers attempt to merge with those entering from Main St.  Please drop off your children at the Walnut St. entrance – at the south end by the playground – or come in through the Main St. entrance.

Applications for the 2014-15 school year are now being accepted.  Siblings and Church Members receive priority consideration  if an application is received by Friday, November 8th.  After this date, all applications will be considered equally.  If you have any questions about the application  process, or if you would like to refer a friend/family member to St. Paul’s, please contact Jill McGee in the Admissions Office (jmcgee@speds.org  816-268-6542), or visit the “Prospective Parents and Students” tab of our web site www.speds.org.
You may access an online application at https://go.speds.org/application

Please Join Us for a Fun and Interactive Discussion About our Kids and Team Sports!
We are looking forward to a community discussion with Bill Severns on Tuesday night at 6:00 PM in the North Wing multipurpose room. Whether you have read Bill’s book, Keepers of the Sandlot, or not, we strongly encourage you to join us.
We have been told by a number of parents in our community to expect a large turnout! So, in order for us to make sure we have adequate seating , please let Linda van Thullenar know that you plan  to attend. She can be reached at Lvan@speds.org.
We hope to see you there!

Monday Morning Memo

What a tremendous group of students we took to the YMCA of the Ozarks last week!  They were cooperative with everyone, encouraging to their peers, enthusiastic participants in everything, and truly delightful young people with whom to work and play.  We were and are very proud of them!

Lifetouch Photos will be taken on Sept. 17th for students in grades 1-8 and the Tuesday Toddlers and Sept. 18th for ECC.  We use Life Touch Studios for individual and class photos.
(Your child will be in the yearbook, even if you choose not to order any of the photo reprints.)
There are three ways to order. With this format there are more options, such as your choice of backgrounds, personalizing the photos, and so on.
a)      Pre-order on-line
b)      Pre-order using the payment envelope attached to the flier
c)      Wait until there are proof photos and order from those.   (Please note:  This choice has fewer options and the cost is a bit more.)
o   If you pre-order, PLEASE return either the order envelope or the on-line receipt (Picture Pass) to your homeroom teacher prior to picture day.  The photographer needs this information to process your order.
·         Please keep the Lifetouch flier handy - it has the information that you will need to complete the ordering process. These went home on Thursday, September 5th.
·         Class photos will not be printed until after make-up day, so the plan is for no one to be missing from the class photos.
·         Please feel free to contact Shirley Laird if you have questions:
o   816-268-6507 school or 816-363-2998 home
o   You can also contact Lifetouch at 816-300-4022.

It’s time for Family Fun Fest!  The fun begins this Friday, September 20th at 3:45 and goes until 6:30, weather permitting.  There will be food and treats galore as our eighth graders and their parents will be selling hot dogs, hamburgers and grilled sausages (all cooked by our wonderful 8th grade dads), chips, popcorn, cookies and drinks.
One of the highlights for the children is the Cake Walk for which we will need at least 75 cakes or other baked goods like cookies, brownies, pies or other fun sweets.  If you would be willing to bake for this event, or even pick up a treat at the store, please drop off your donation in the morning carpool line on Friday, September 20th.  Volunteers will collect in both carpool lines.
Tickets can be purchased on line in advance with a credit card (for which you will receive free bonus tickets) at     https://stpeds.ejoinme.org/MyEvents/Family Fun Fest2013/Family Fun FestTicketSales/tabid/473229/Default.aspx until Wednesday, September 18th at 3:00 pm.
Pre-purchased tickets and day of tickets sales can be picked up and/or purchased on Friday, September 20th from 8-10 am and 1-3 pm in the foyer of the main building to avoid standing in line at the field.  Tickets sales between these hours at school can be charged to your credit card.  Tickets being purchased on the field will have to be paid by CASH or CHECK ONLY.  No school charges or credit cards will be permitted on the field.  Please note that purchasing or picking up tickets on the field will result in standing in line. Avoid the lines and purchase your tickets before 3:00 pm on September 20th!!

A note from the administration about Family Fun Fest:  Students will not be allowed to go to the Family Fun Fest if unaccompanied by an adult.  So please be sure the school office and your child’s teacher knows if another parent will be accompanying your child.  Also, if your child goes to after school care, he/she will have to have your permission if another adult is going to take your child from that program to the Family Fun Fest.  Students are also not to leave the upper field to go to Starbucks or return to the school without being accompanied by a parent, once they have been dismissed and/or gone to the event.  Please know that these are only meant to keep your child safe.  Teachers and administrators will NOT be supervising students during this family event.

This Friday is “Feed the Need Friday” in chapel.  If you and your family would like to contribute a non-perishable food item to the pantry, please bring something to our all-school chapel service.

High School Night is Thursday, September 26, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the third floor commons.  Eighth grade students and their parents are invited to first hear from Mr. Van about the high school application process and how teachers and administrators help in that process.  Then at 6:30, they will go to the new multipurpose room to talk with representatives from local high schools about their program and application process.  If you do NOT want your child’s address given to local high schools, please let Mr. Van know, so that he can remove your child’s name from the mailing list that the schools request.

When I contemplate the last ten years of my life, I am warmed by the generous spirit of  St. Paul’s families.  Your willingness to step forward to volunteer when needed, the energy and enthusiasm that goes into everything the parents undertake and the amazing support of our fundraising efforts have never ceased to amaze me.
One of my greatest pleasures was working on the capital campaign and seeing the fruits of our labors in the Early Childhood Center.  The North Wing is a true testament to the commitment of every family to the future of St. Paul’s and I will always be grateful for the way so many people dug deeply and gave from their hearts for the future of our school – even though the children of most of these donors were no longer young enough to benefit from the new building!
Like the North Wing Capital Campaign, we are asking all of you to consider carefully an additional gift over and above that which you already do annually.  This is our opportunity to ensure the future of St. Paul’s for our children, our grandchildren and beyond by making a commitment to our endowment campaign.  Please take a moment to watch the video if you have not seen it already and spend some time thinking about how you might make a “stretch” gift over time to support this special campaign.
Success in securing gifts and pledges of $3 Million for the Endowment Fund will allow all of us to know that St. Paul’s stands on firmer financial footing for the future.
If you haven’t taken a moment to see our video, please do: http://www.speds.org/support/endow/

We are off to an amazing start to the 2013-14 school year, and the Admissions Office is already busy preparing for 2014-15!  The online application for students applying for the 2014-15 school year is now available on our web site or can be accessed here: https://go.speds.org/application.  (Please note that this is slow to upload.)  The deadline for priority consideration for siblings and church members is Friday, November 8th.  The deadline is earlier this year because we will be screening students as early as mid-November for available positions.  All parents are encouraged to apply at their earliest convenience so we can ensure their inclusion in our admissions process.
Please encourage your friends to contact Jill McGee in the Admissions Office (816-268-6542, or Jmcgee@speds.org) for a tour and introduction to our school.

Community Learning Event -- Bill Severns, coach and author, has written a compelling book titled, Keepers of the Sandlot, where he provides insight and perspective into what our children truly seek through their participation in team sports. Bill played professional baseball for six years in the Brewers organization, but his true passion came from the twenty-three years he spent coaching youth baseball. Through Bill’s life experiences, he has valuable insights and perspectives to share with our community. On October 2nd, 2013, Bill will be at St. Paul’s for a community discussion at 6:00 PM in the north wing multi-purpose room.
We strongly encourage all coaches and parents of children who play sports to attend. There is no charge for this event but please RSVP by contacting Linda van Thullenar at Lvan@speds.org. Copies of Keepers of the Sandlot and the Sandlot Strategy are available for check out from the Early Childhood office. If you would like more information about Bill or the books please visit:  http://billseverns.com.

Some of our alums from the Class of 2010 who attend Pembroke Hill School were named National Merit Semi-Finalists this week!  Teddy T., Jon C., Quint U., Peter T., and Grant F. have distinguished themselves by being a full one-third of those so honored at PHS!  Teddy, Jon, and Quint were also named to the Pembroke Hill Cum Laude Society last May.  They were among the top ten in their class on the basis of grades.  We are so proud of these former students and hope other parents will share the accolades their children/alums receive so we can publish them, too!

Get ready to Get Your Groove On ... The October 4th Buddy Run is quickly approaching.  Remember this is the Parents' Guild's only fundraiser until the spring auction.  Bronze, Silver, and Gold sponsors will have their names on the back of the Buddy Run t-shirt.  The deadline for names on the back of t-shirts is September 16th - Today!  Please follow this link to make a donation.  https://stpeds.ejoinme.org/MyEvents/BuddyRun2013/Registration/tabid/484794/Default.aspx  Please note that the preschool through eighth grade students participate in the Buddy Run.  The toddler classes will have a special buddy activity on this day, but they will not attend the Buddy Run as a class.
To help us gear up for the Buddy Run, SPIN Pizza will be donating 10% of sales all day long every Tuesday in September with the attached flyer or by mentioning St. Paul's school.
http://www.speds.org/file/download/SPINSept2013_sm.pdf  Get ready to shop at STUFF on Thursday, September 26th.  STUFF in Brookside will be hosting a donation day with 15% of sales going to the Buddy Run.

Monday Morning Memo

Tomorrow Mr. van Thullenar, Mr. Stewart, Ms. Glass, Mrs. Gruss, our eighth grade students and I leave for the YMCA Camp of the Ozarks (formerly known as Potosi) trip.  Mrs. Willets will join us on Wednesday.  We will be gone through the end of the day on Friday, experiencing challenges on the ground and on high elements, goal setting activities, orienteering, an excursion to Elephant Rocks and Johnson Shut-Ins, a dance, and three nights in cabins by the lake.  It will be a memorable time for all of us!

The first Parents’ Guild meeting of the year will be this Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 8:30 a.m. in the Garden Room of the church building.  All parents are members of the Parents’ Guild and are invited to attend this and all other meetings of the group to hear what is happening in the organization and find out ways in which you can be more involved, if you’d like.

We are very concerned about the parents who are walking their children between parked cars and through carpool traffic in the parking lot each morning.  This puts both adults and children in danger and we want to ensure your safety.  Security officer Aaron Braun is located near the north playground to assist those crossing the street and there is a striped crosswalk closer to the school.  PLEASE use one or the other of these to cross, if you do not join the carpool line (which is, of course, our preference) so we and your fellow carpoolers can know where you’ll be! On another carpool note:  We are also very concerned about parents parking south of 41st street and walking their children across all of the oncoming and turning traffic at the corner of 41st and Walnut.  Please use the carpool line.  If your children have after school appointments, please arrive early to be one of the first to have your child load into your car.

Lifetouch Photos will be taken on Sept. 17th for students in grades 1-8 and the Tuesday Toddlers and Sept. 18th for ECC.  We use Life Touch Studios for individual and class photos.

Get ready to Get Your Groove On ... The Buddy Run is coming.  The October 4th Buddy Run is quickly approaching.  Remember this is the Parents’ Guild's only fundraiser until the spring auction.  Families or companies donating at the Gold ($500), Silver ($250), or Bronze ($150) level make it possible for every St. Paul's student to receive a t-shirt to wear the day of the run.  Families or companies donating at any of these three levels will have their names on the back of the t-shirt.  The deadline for names on the back of the t-shirt is September 16.  Please help us make the 2013 Buddy Run a success by following this link to make a donation.  https://stpeds.ejoinme.org/MyEvents/BuddyRun2013/Registration/tabid/484794/Default.aspx  Thank you for your support.  Please note that preschool through eighth grade students participate in the Buddy Run.  The toddler classes will have a special buddy activity on this day, but they will not attend the Buddy Run as a class.

Addendum to the MMM

The Buddy Run was such an amazing event last Friday and I failed to mention it in the memo today!  I could not let another day go by without thanking Amy Graham and Mary Morris for their excellent leadership and the organization of the many volunteers who assisted them.  It was a delightful event – a little colder than we would have liked but, as Amy said, at least it wasn’t raining!  The students did not seem to notice the cold and had a wonderful time cheering, running, jumping, and celebrating one of their favorite events.  Thanks to all who helped and attended for making this a delightful and successful FUNdraiser for St. Paul’s!

Monday Morning Memo

Remember our early dismissal today at 12:00 noon for ALL students, except those enrolled in after care.  Our faculty will be using the rest of the afternoon for professional development work.
Please note that the entire school will be dismissed at 12:00 PM which makes for a longer carpool on this day. We appreciate your patience as it takes longer to load more students.

The Lower School Coffee will be this Thursday at 8:30 in the Garden Room of the church.  If you have the time and would like to share your child’s and your experiences to date this year, please feel free to join us.

The Buddy Run is almost here!  It’s this Friday morning!  We’re hoping for another glorious day to run and cheer and celebrate our buddy partnerships on the upper field after all-school chapel.
Register your children here  https://stpeds.ejoinme.org/?tabid=387225
Turn in your child's sponsor sheet by Friday! The child with the most sponsors will be Head of School for a day.  Eat at California Pizza Kitchen on Monday for the half day - special reserved section for SPEDS!  Shop at Stuff on Thursday all day!  Proceeds from these opportunities will benefit this special fundraising event.  Come and join the fun Friday at 9 a.m. on the upper field!

The Toddler teachers have found that the Buddy Run is overwhelming with the noise, number of people, and eventual separation from their parents.  So, while they will happily support any parent who would like to take his/her child to the event to share the experience with siblings, they will not be taking the whole group to the Run.  They will be having a special buddy activity with their third grade buddies this week, and the third graders will run with picture representatives of their little buddies.  We do hope you understand that this is being done for the sake of the students in the eyes of our experienced toddler teachers.

Some Announcements from the Health Office:
·        We still have several families who have not filled out their Emergency Directory and Health Information forms for each student attending St. Paul’s.  Our student forms are online at: https://go.speds.org/studentinfo. We sent out login information this summer, but if you don’t have your username and password, please call the front desk (816) 931-8614.
·        Student Directory and Policies and Procedure Handbooks were sent home last week.  Please familiarize yourself with the new procedure for reporting absences on page nine (9) of the Handbook.  If a child is to be absent, parents or guardians are asked to notify the school daily by phone before 8:30 am.  A parent should call every day of the student’s absence; otherwise the school office will contact the parent or guardian to make sure that the student is safe at home.  You may choose to e-mail this information but a phone call is the most timely way to get this information to the school nurse before calls are made.
·        There will be a snack offered to each student after the Buddy Run on this Friday, October 19. As per school policy, if your child has a life-threatening food allergy, you are asked to send a snack to school that morning for him/her that is safe to consume.
If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact the school nurse, Catherine Kuhls at CKuhls@speds.org.  Thank you.

ABC Sale:  It’s time to clean out your attics, basements and closets because the ABC Sale is fast approaching! Donations of gently used clothing, shoes, toys and household items will be accepted October 15-17 during school hours, and the sale will run October 18-20. As always, we can use lots of volunteer help to sort the donations and staff the sale.  Starbucks, doughnuts, and Halloween candy will be provided to fuel the work. Your room parents will e-mail you a link to the on-line sign-up for the sale. In the meantime, if you have any questions, feel free to contact Jennifer Martin at jenellenmartin@hotmail.com, Kelly Groebl at kgroebl@gmail.com, or Tracey Weisenfels at mrsnip@kc.rr.com, the Chairs of this special community service project – a joint effort of the Parents’ Guild and the church.

This is a special auction year for St. Paul’s where we will celebrate the school’s first 50 years and the next 50 going forward. Please mark your calendars and plan to join us on February 2nd, 2013 at the home of Joe & Marian Tutera for the Parent Gift Gathering Party and on April 6th, 2013 at the Marriott Muehlebach for the 50 & Fabulous Auction Gala. Get ready – it’s going to be a fabulously fun 50th!
