MONDAY MORNING MEMO

Thank you to all who made the retirement chapel and reception for Ms. Twyman so successful!  We appreciate all who came to share in the celebration of her 35 years of teaching at our school.  Thanks to Pauline Henne for organizing the reception food and to our food service personnel for preparing it.

On Tuesday, May 15 at 8:00 a.m., we will dedícate two trees in memory of Lathrop Gates.  Mr. Gates was part of the team of people who rebuilt the school when it burned in 1992.  Lathrop was the main fundraiser for the project, a trustee on our board and on that of the Barstow School, and was the father of two daughters who graduated from St. Paul’s.  All those who wish to join us are welcome on the upper field behind the bleachers.

The last Parents' Guild meeting of the year will be this Thursday at the home of Britton Norden (2221 Drury Lane  S.M, KS), at 7:00 p.m.  Every St. Paul's parent is a member of Parents' Guild and is welcome to attend!   We will be conducting a bit of business as well as celebrating a very successful year and transitioning to next year's Chairs.  Please RSVP to Britton at britton3@mac.com and let her know if you can make it.  Also, The Parents’ Guild Executive Board (the elected officers) conducted its annual, required review of Bylaws and voted to present an Amendment to the membership. The Amendment is posted in the Parents' Guild section of our website. This serves as notice of Bylaw Amendment, and the membership will vote on the changes at Thursday's Parents’ Guild meeting.  Please feel free to contact Britton with any questions or comments.

Middle School finals will be held Monday – Thursday of this week.
The finals will occur during the students’ regular class times.

The second grade spring music program will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 17 in the north wing multipurpose room.
These engaging performers, under the direction of Mrs. Haskamp, will entertain family and friends with their happy music making.

This Friday we will celebrate Spirit Day and Feed the Need Friday!  Show your St. Paul’s colors and help restock the pantry with any non-perishable food ítems you would care to bring.

The first through fourth graders enjoyed stocking up on some “new” books when almost 450  books were swapped with friends last week!
Thanks to all those who participated in the inaugural Soar Into Summer: Read! program sponsored by the book fair committee.  We hope to make it an annual event!

The Metropolitan Private School League (MPSL) voted last month to eliminate fifth grade sports from the middle school athletic program.  Several of the schools had discontinued participation with their fifth graders, leaving only St. Paul’s, Pembroke Hill and Heritage Christian offering participation to fifth graders.  Although the council tried to continue a program for fifth graders with just three schools, it had become apparent that there were not enough teams to create a competitive league.  This means that our students and all others in this league will not begin competing in school-sponsored teams until the sixth grade.  We will continue to offer tennis, which we control individually, and lacrosse, which is part of the KC Metro Girls Lacrosse Association (KCMGLA) and the KC Youth Lacrosse League (KCYLL), to our fifth graders.  If you have questions or concerns about this decision, please contact Randy Kurt, our Athletic Director and our representative to this league at rkurt@speds.org.  We regret this change of events and hope students will remain active in their YMCA and other sponsored leagues.

The results of the Grand Concours French Exam for the 7th and 8th Graders are now available.

For the latest news on the 50th Anniversary Endowment Campaign, go to http://www.speds.org/alumni/endowment-news/.  You’ll be amazed at the numbers that our chairs, Joe and Marian Tutera and Kathleen and Kurt Wiedeman and their volunteers have garnered to date!

Sadly the faculty lost once again to the “Swagg Dooskies”  otherwise known as the green team in the dodge ball tournament last Wednesday.
The good news is that $288 was raised for Haiti just through playing dodge ball, and we had a lot of fun doing it.  And none of the faculty got hurt either!

Chaplain’s update on 2011-12 Presidential Service Award:  Thus far I have the following students receiving the 50 hour pin for community service hours:  Campbell and Tatum R, Andrew and Lena B, Lili and Mimi W, Will F, Lena B, Zach T, Dominic T, Gregory W, Zoe J, George R, Kit F and Tommy S.  Taylor L will receive the 100 hour pin.  Please e-mail Chaplain Nolan no later than Friday, May 25 with updates or corrections:  pbauer@speds.org.  Thank you.

MONDAY MORNING MEMO

Another entertaining show from the third graders, led by Mrs. Fatu, brought down the house on Thursday evening!   The enthusiasm of the performers, the humor, and, of course, the talent wowed us all!

Ms. Sherry Twyman will retire at the end of the year and it’s time to celebrate her thirty-five (35!) years of teaching at St. Paul’s.  This Friday, May 11, following our all-school chapel service (at approximately 9:15 a.m.), there will be a reception in her honor in the Parish Hall of the church.  Please come join us in saying thank you for all the students who have benefited from her high expectations and model as a lifelong learner.

Visit Days begin next week with preschool students visiting prekindergarten on Tuesday, May 8.  Visit Days provide opportunities for the children to spend a little time in the grade level to which they will be moving next year.  On Friday the 11th, toddler students are visiting preschool.   There will be other visits prior to the end of school for students who have not yet had a chance to visit the next grade level.

Join us for TGIF Friday Fun in extended day!  On Friday, May 11, we will have a Mother's Day gift and card making workshop.  Children will have an opportunity to make cards and crafts like bird houses and pennant banners that will be special Mother's Day gifts.  No need to pre-register...just show up in extended day on Friday ready to have fun!

It is official:  Michelle Johnson will be our new part-time Diversity Coordinator, beginning this fall!  Michelle writes a column for the Kansas City Star with the by-line of the “Diversity Diva”.  She has worked with many organizations to help them become more inclusive communities and has written a number of plays, articles, and a book.  We look forward to capitalizing on her enthusiasm, experience, and expertise as we move forward.

Please join the Parents' Guild for the last meeting of the year!  Originally scheduled for May 9, the meeting has been moved to May 17 at 7:00 p.m. at the home of Britton Norden (2221 Drury Lane, SM, KS).  Please join us to celebrate a successful year and to transition to next year's chairmen.  Please RVSP to Britton at Britton3@mac.com.

Reminder:  Summer is fast approaching, so don't forget to sign up for our great summer camps at St. Paul's!  The dates of the program are June 4-29 and July 9-August 3.  Camps are already filling up, so contact Christina Lenon, Director of Enrichment Programs, at 816-268-6536 or clenon@speds.org for more information or to register.  Click to learn more about our summer programs.

The Spirit Store is still open until the end of the school year. We have water bottles for summer sports; sack Packs for summer camps; canvas totes for the pool; and lots of great t-shirts and sweatshirts are still available. The NOTECARDS are ON SALE at half price (originally $15 now only $7.50 a box) and will not be coming back next year. You can visit The Spirit Store online at http://www.speds.org/current-parents-and-students/spirit-store/. Or email your request to Casey Simmons at casey@pursuegoodstuff.com.

The Auction Chairs, Amy Holewinski and Sarah Telford, are thrilled to report: the total revenue raised by the 2012 Game On! Auction was over $296,000! These results are bigger than we could have imagined - exceeding our goal by $76,000!   As excited as we are about the results, we are most proud of how our community stepped up in every way. Our parent volunteers donated countless hours to make the event a success, and the school provided a wonderful venue for our parents, teachers, staff and church members to enjoy the evening and celebrate our children and St. Paul's. We are truly overwhelmed by the generosity of our community in making the event such a success!
We are also excited to report that we have met our goal, and raised over $38,000 for fund-a-need, which enables us to build the asphalt walking/running track, the basketball half-court and the four-seat swing set! We are still accepting donations, which will be used toward benches and landscaping around the field improvements. If you would like to donate and have not yet done so, please click here: https://stpeds.ejoinme.org/?tabid=336071
Thank you again for your donations of time and talents. We hope you’ve noticed our recognition of underwriters, in-kind donors and party hosts, and fund-a-need donors on the bulletin board in the hall (along with some fun photos from the Auction and Benefit Games). You can also view fund-a-need donors by clicking here.  Finally, thanks to all who “played” at Game On!

And, of course, all of us in the school express our sincere appreciation to Amy and Sarah for the parties that were such fun; an organized effort; the great volunteers they enlisted; their attention to detail; the ease with which they worked with everyone; and that incredible bottom line!

Another important parking notice:  Cars are not to park on the west side of Walnut from 40th to 41st St.!  Delivery trucks are not being able to get through and we fear that police will be called by the delivery people, causing our folks to incur a ticket.  You must be in your vehicle if waiting for carpool, so that you can move, if needed, to allow delivery trucks or emergency vehicles to get through.

First grade families raised over $2600 for Haiti with their lemonade and cookie stand!  Thanks to all who baked, served, bought, and lingered to enjoy the happy chaos of this very successful fundraising effort.  Congratulations to the first grade teacher team for their leadership in this great event!

Veronica L received a silver medal for the National Spanish Exam with a score of 93%.  Max S received an Honorable Mention on the same exam.  Congratulations to these Spanish scholars!

MONDAY MORNING MEMO

It was another amazing week at St. Paul’s, with Grandparents and Special Friends visiting on Wednesday; a highly successful and well-attended Art Fair on the same day; World Culture Night on Thursday night to nourish our minds and bodies; and delightful toddler and preschool music demonstrations on Thursday and Friday!  Thank you so much to all the people who made these events happen – and it took a village for each of them – and to all of you for attending and making it worth the work!

Faculty and staff enjoyed a productive afternoon on Friday, working on curriculum, technology initiatives, and special projects.

Thank you to all of our current families for the smooth re-enrollment process this spring.  This is a reminder that the cancellation policy states that you must withdrawal by May 1, 2012 in order to forfeit only the deposit.  After May 1, you become responsible for 50% of the full year tuition.  After June 15, 2012, families are responsible for 100% of the tuition regardless of whether the student attends.  Please contact Miriam Zavagnin immediately if you plan to withdraw.  Needless to say, we sincerely hope to see all of you return next year!

It's the LAST week to order school supplies for next year!  You may pre-purchase a school supply pack for next fall.  The packets are ordered through Innisbrook School Supplies and are priced at the school’s cost.  This opportunity is offered as a convenience for St. Paul’s families.  Parents are free to choose the supply pack or shop on their own.  Order dates:  4/16/12 - 5/4/12. There are two ways to place your order:  1)  Order online at www.ordermypack.com , select Buy School Supplies, and enter our school number: 120688.  Pay with a credit card at checkout.  A convenience charge of $1.50 per pack will be added to all online orders.  2)  Complete and return an order form to the school front desk.  Charges will be billed to your school account in August. The order form and school supply lists are available on the St. Paul's website.   If you are unable to print what you need, please contact Linda van Thullenar and she will send them to you. All supply packets will be delivered directly to school and distributed to students at Open House on Wednesday, August 15.  New This Year – Do you have trouble finding the required art supplies?  You now have the option of ordering just the art supplies at a cost of $10.00 on the order form. Please don’t wait – place your order today, if you want to take advantage of this opportunity!

Anna Louise S will be the Head of School for the Day on Tuesday, May 1, and that’s this Tuesday!  She has declared this day to be “Crazy Day” in terms of clothing.  You are invited to celebrate your individuality, mix your color combinations, and express your style creatively.  Or you can just come as your “normal” self.  Please stay within the dress code in terms of no flip flops or Crocs and nothing too short or revealing.  (That’s the temporarily deposed Head of School talking here!)  Please watch for her at carpool and visiting classrooms and running the school.

Our third grade students will be performing for their parents in their spring showcase this Thursday, May 3rd, at 7:00 p.m. in the north wing multipurpose room.  We hope you’ll join them as they sing and dance and celebrate the music in their lives.

Ed “Scrappy” Dobbins, husband of our former Admissions Director, teacher, and friend, Mary, passed away on Friday morning.
Mary had asked that I not share through this memo his struggles during the last few weeks, as the family members were having a hard time dealing with all they had to face.  But she has given me permission to let you know of his passing and of the funeral which will be this Thursday, May 3rd, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church at 4:00 p.m., with a reception following at the church.

Mrs. Goutierre, one of our second grade teachers, gave birth to her second child yesterday – a lovely little girl they have named Vienna Elizabeth.  She is 19“ long, weighs 6 lbs., 10 oz., and she and Mom are doing very well!  Kate Hamlin, a certified teacher and the associate in that grade, will take over the lead teaching responsibilities and Karen McDonald, a former teacher with us and a current teacher in our extended day program, will be the associate in that grade for the remainder of the year.  Congratulations to the Goutierres!

The West Garden was renovated last week by our third graders and parent volunteers.  The Garden will be blessed on Wednesday, May 2nd at an 8:45 AM Chapel for Toddler, PreS, PreK, 2nd and 3rd graders in the garden.  Seating is limited (and primarily on the ground!) and the students will take most of the space.  However, parents are welcome, if they don’t mind standing.  The Chapel will have a normal service with singing and a lesson.  It will end about 9:05 AM.

The 5th grade Spanish Mercado will be this Friday,  May 4th from 2 - 3 p.m. in N MPR.
Fifth graders will be representing their selected country in native costume, speaking about the country and selling a homemade craft typical of that country to visitors.  Parents are encouraged to attend to hear our fifth graders demonstrate their skill in speaking Spanish.

Let Your Imagination Soar: Read! The Middle School Book Fair for grades 5-8 is this Wednesday, May 2nd, in the Middle School Commons.  Freshman required reading will be available for the 8th graders, as well as many other interesting titles for all to enjoy. Signed charge slips or cash are required to make a purchase.

Soar into Summer: Read!
The book fair committee is sponsoring a book swap for grades 1-4 on Tuesday, May 8th. Beginning Friday, May 4th, each child may bring up to five books that he/she has read to swap for “new” books. This is a great opportunity to stock up on some new summer reading.

A special thanks to those early childhood parents who attended the Love and Logic Webinars last week.  We were pleased by the favorable turnout and plan to offer additional Love and Logic parenting classes during the last two weeks of June. More information regarding dates and times will be available within the next two weeks.

The results have been sent to us about the excellent performance of our students on the National FLES exam.  All the 6th graders taking French this year participated in the contest in February and nine students had their scores submitted for national recognition.  13,000 students in first to sixth grade participated in the contest this year.  The results they achieved are:  7th place - Ella L, Caroline S, and Zach T;  8th - Catherine E, Natalie K, Connor T; 9th - Carol-Ann G: 10th - Jensen P, Layne S; and Honorable Mention - Anna Louise S.  Félicitations à tous!

ADDENDUM TO THE MMM

I failed to mention three very important events happening this week and none of my proofreaders caught these omissions either, so here is an update to what’s happening this week!

Our Preschool Music Demonstration will occur on Thursday morning at 9:00 a.m. in the north wing multipurpose room.  This is an opportunity for preschool parents to interact with their children in activities that happen in their music classes.  So come dressed comfortably for getting on the floor and rocking with your child!

Eighth grade World Culture Night will happen this Thursday from 4:30 – 6:00.  This is a delightful visit to countries the students have studied, where they will be dressed in costume and serving food that is typical of that served in their chosen country.  Students will be able to share information they have learned but we all enjoy the food most of all!

Our Toddler Music Demonstration will be on Friday morning at 9:15, following all-school chapel, in the north wing multipurpose room.  This, too, is a hands-on demonstration with participation from the parents so please come ready to interact in music and dance with your child.

These events plus Grandparents and Special Friends Day for kindergarten, fourth, and eighth grades and the Art Fair for everyone on Wednesday; and noon dismissal for all students on Friday complete a very full week for all of us!

MONDAY MORNING MEMO

This is a special week for the grandparents and special friends of our kindergarten, fourth, and eighth grade students!  Our special day for these guests will be this Wednesday, with kindergarten grandparents and special friends coming for the morning and fourth and eighth grade special guests coming for the afternoon.  [For those of you who are new to the school, we have to limit the participation to these grades because of the outstanding participation we receive, which precludes us from being able to accommodate all of our grandparents and special friends.  But your child’s time will come – three times during your time at our school!]  Please see the school website for a complete schedule of events for our kindergarten, fourth, and eighth grade guests.

The Art Fair – the showcase of our k – 8th grade students’ art work throughout the year – will be on display for your enjoyment this Wednesday.
The fair will be open from 3:30 – 7:00 and we hope you’ll stop by to marvel at the work of your children, as directed by our art teachers, Mrs. Crumpecker and Ms. Laird.  It’s worth the visit and these teachers have worked all weekend long to display the children’s work.

There is a noon dismissal for ALL students this Friday for faculty to pursue professional development.  There will be only one carpool dismissal and that will be at 12:00 noon on Friday.  This will be a longer carpool, due to the numbers of students being dismissed, so please be patient with us!

Friday is also Spirit Day so encourage your children to show their school pride by wearing their St. Paul’s logo t-shirts!

We had a successful lock-down drill this morning!
This drill is a practice -- in case there is a stranger who is considered dangerous in the building or a situation outside the building that requires us to be safely tucked away inside our rooms.  All went well and we worked to ensure that the children were not frightened by the experience.

The Service Club meets after school this Tuesday, April 24, for an approximately 60 minute meeting.  We will be distributing baked goods from the cyber bake-sale.  All k-5 are welcome with a parent and Middle Schoolers may come alone. Let me know to expect you by e-mailing me at pbauer@speds.org.    We will meet in the main hallway of the south building.  A snack will be provided.

The Cyber Bake Sale is here.
Generous donations are welcome for the baked offerings which will be delivered to your child’s classroom Tuesday after school.  They may be picked up during the day on Tuesday if that is preferred.

This year we are not suggesting a price per item with the hope that people will be especially generous.  All proceeds go to the recovery effort in Harveyville, Kansas which had nearly half of their town destroyed.  To purchase an item:

1.       To see the list of available items, click the bake sale link on the SPEDS chaplain’s blog:  http://spedsnolan.blogspot.com/
2.  Email me with the item you wish to purchase:  pbauer@speds.org
3.  Checks are to be delivered by students to the chaplain’s office on Tuesday, April 24.   They may be made out to SPEDS with a “Harveyville” notation.

Ted van Thullenar, our Middle School Division Head, submitted a proposal to present at our association’s annual conference and was just notified that it was selected!  The Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS) works with over 80 independent schools in the Midwest region of the US and holds an annual conference each year in November.  We are proud of the fact that Ted will be talking about transitioning to Middle School.

The Middle School Book Fair for grades 5-8 will be on Wednesday, May 2nd, in the middle school commons. This is a great time to stock up on some summer reading material and for the 8th graders to purchase their freshman required reading. Let Your Imagination Soar: Read!

Service Hours are due May 23 for the President’s Volunteer Service Award.  Remember that 50 hours are needed to earn a certificate and pin.  8th graders who have participated on the Chapel Leadership Team receive 22 hours of credit per quarter. Captains have a total of 45 hours. Please e-mail Chaplain Nolan with hour updates or ask your student to stop by the chaplain’s office for service hour record coupons.

Gregory W, one of our eighth graders, has earned the distinction of being an Eagle Scout!
We are proud of the work he has done to achieve this honor.

Joshua M, one of our first graders, submitted a YouTube video in a LegoLand competition in order to earn a place on the Junior Construction Panel and he won!
There were 133 entries and they picked 12 children from the KC area, ages 6-12, to be on the panel. We thought you would enjoy seeing his creative entry:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mSNLv82oAk&feature=youtu.be

Gillian C, an eighth grader, was awarded the Windmoor Scholarship at St. Teresa’s Academy for next year.  Sophia P, an eighth grader, was awarded the Alumnae Scholarship at STA.  Congratulations to these ladies for the awards they earned through their hard work here!

The following students qualified for State Recognition in Duke University Talent Identification Program:  Haley B, Philip B. Elyse C, Clayton F, Lilly H, Lilly L, Monty L, Caroline McD, Danny T, and Sydney W.  This program seeks to identify, through standardized testing results, academically talented students and to offer those who qualify summer enrichment opportunities.  Congratulations to these students for their hard work, too!

Monday Morning Memo

I am SO proud of our students, our teachers, and our parents! What an incredible week we had last week:
- Thanks to great preparation by the Watt family and by the teachers, the 50th picture went off without a hitch. We had an excellent practice on Monday, and a flawless experience with the picture on Tuesday, in spite of a chill in the air. It was amazing to see more than 515 people from age 3 on up work so well together.
- The sixth graders performed a lively international show on Thursday night with great enthusiasm and joy, under the direction of Mrs. Fatu. We were all thoroughly entertained – in several languages, in song, and in dance.
- On Friday we had a Eucharist service for our third through eighth graders which, once again, was handled so well by our students. They were respectful, thoroughly engaged and so well behaved. Our younger children enjoyed a visit from the Easter bunny in a service led by Chaplain Bauer-Nolan as they explored the sacred and secular sides of Easter.
- On Saturday our Science Olympiad team competed admirably in Columbia at the State level of competition. [See more news about this below.] Their hard work to get to this event and the diligence with which they approached each aspect of the competition was a source of pride for all of us.
- And on Saturday night, we enjoyed the party of the year with delightful camaraderie among the adults of our community at the “Game On” auction. While the bottom line financially is still being tallied, the event was a HUGE success because of the warm feelings, good food and drink, and festive atmosphere created by Amy Holewinski, Sarah Telford, and their many amazing volunteers. Many thanks also to the eighth graders and their parents for returning to help with clean-up on Sunday and to ALL the parents who came to support this great event!
It was an outstanding week that celebrated the very best of St. Paul’s – our work, worship and play together in the name of and for the benefit of our children! Thank you, All, for making it such a memorable, successful week!
St. Paul’s Episcopal Science Olympiad team received 6th place ranking out of the 32 teams at State this year! Jesse Hall at the University of MO was packed with both middle school and high school teams as the medals, ribbons, and MU scholarships were presented on stage and freebies from the university were hurled into the mass of students. Very exciting! Most of the storms passing through were avoided but two outside events, Bottle Rockets and Storm the Castle were cancelled. The students were very stoic about this disappointment. Congratulations to team members Tucker, Samantha, Kit, Veronica, Chris, George, Ellison, Sophie, Max, Philip, Elyse, Meghan, Lilly, Claire, Lily and Drake. Team members placing in their events were: Ellison and Sophie awarded 5th in Compute This; Sophie, Ellison and Veronica awarded 5th in Experimental Design; Samantha and Max awarded 5th place in Road Scholar; Meghan and Elyse awarded 2nd place in Water Quality; and Sophie and Ellison awarded 3rd place in Write It/Do It.
Mr. Stewart and Ms. Twyman enjoyed traveling with this wonderful group of scholars very much and the team members, Mr. Stewart and Ms. Twyman want to acknowledge the love and support of the parents who traveled with the team and made the trip possible, safe and lots of fun: Mrs. Haistings, Mrs. Rooney, Dr. Chinnock, Mrs. Prochnow and Mr. McCann. The team is also grateful to the team parents this year, Mrs. & Mrs. Woolley and Mrs. Jeanine Haistings.
It's time to order school supplies for next year! There are two ways to place your order:
1) Order online at www.ordermypack.com, select “Buy School Supplies”, and enter our school number: 120688. Pay with a credit card at checkout. A convenience charge of $1.50 per pack will be added to all online orders.
2) Complete and return an order form to the school front desk. Charges will be billed to your school account in August.
The order form and school supply lists are available on the St. Paul's website.. If you are unable to print what you need, please contact Linda van Thullenar and she will send them to you. All supply packets will be delivered directly to school and distributed to students at Open House on Wednesday, August 15.

Time: 6:00 – 7:00 PM
The ECC and Lower School Division teachers and staff invite you to visit the grade level your child will be entering in the next school year. This is a casual and informal opportunity for you to meet the teachers, walk through the classrooms and see examples of current student work and projects. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about what’s to come in the next school year.
Three candidates for our part-time Diversity Coordinator will be coming to visit for half a day this week, as they have made it through the first round interviews. We look forward to getting to know each better, and having others in the community get to know them, in order to determine the best fit for our school.

TGIF Fun in Extended Day
: This Friday, April 20, the extended day staff will host a Fiber Craft Fun Day! We will work on small knitting, beadwork and latch hook projects. No need to pre-register - just come join us when the bell rings. See you then!

Calling all bakers
: We are having our second annual Cyber bake sale. This one will benefit Harveyville, Kansas as they start to recover from the tornado that destroyed half of their town. If you would like to donate a baked item (and we hope you will!), please e-mail Pam at pbauer@speds.org. Be specific about what you are offering. The items will need to be turned in by Tuesday, April 24. Last year we had a wonderful variety of cinnamon rolls, cookies, cakes and pies. We welcome everything. In next Monday's MMM, we will provide a link to the list of baked items. You may then e-mail me your choice: first come, first served. Items will be distributed to your child's class no later than Wednesday.

Service Club
: We will be meeting after school on Tuesday, April 24 to support the cyber bake-salel, distributing items and writing thank you notes. Please e-mail Chaplain Nolan if you plan on attending: pbauer@speds.org. Remember, Service Club requires a parent's participation for those students who are in fifth grade or younger.

Auction Lost and Found:
Did you leave the auction without your umbrella? If so, check at the ECC reception desk. You can check with Sarah Telford about anything else you might have lost.

MONDAY MORNING MEMO

Today is our practice for the all-school picture to be taken tomorrow morning. Does your child have a white shirt here at school? Please be sure to send one tomorrow, if you have not done so already. Thanks!

We are so grateful to Jill and Joe Watt who have made this all-school picture possible! They have organized it, drawn the numbers on the field, arranged for the helicopter and photographer – in other words, they’re doing it all! Thank you, thank you, thank you for starting our 50th in such an exciting way. By the way, Jill is very capably leading ALL of the 50th Anniversary plans, too!

Thank you to all who attended conferences last week and to the teachers for all their preparation for those meetings! We value this time with you and appreciate the time that you share with us.

Middle School Transition Night and the Sixth Grade Program are this Thurs., Apr 12, at 6:00 and 7:00, respectively. Transition night is meant for all parents of next year’s MS students since students change a lot in their three years in this division. However, it is especially helpful for parents of fifth grade students who have not yet experienced middle school. The objective is to share the developmental and academic changes one can expect to see at this time. We hope you’ll join us!

Sixth grade parents who would like to attend both Transition Night and the program are asked to leave their children in the ECC Commons where an adult will supervise them until 6:30, when Mrs. Fatu will be organizing them for the program.

The sixth graders will dazzle their parents and friends with an international show, led by Mrs. Fatu at 7:00 in the north wing MPR.

The Kindergarten Mothers’ Lunch will be this Fri., Apr. 13th at 12:15. Parents will gather in the ECC Commons and then go to the classroom of their child. It will be a little over an hour of classroom visit, lunch, and an activity with your child. If you cannot come, we urge you to send a special friend to enjoy this time with your child or let us know and one of the administrators will happily be a surrogate for this time!

The game clock is running! Only five days until the Game On Auction! -- Send in your reservation cards, or make your reservations online – it’s easy! We need to have an accurate count to the caterer early this week, so please help us out and make your reservations as soon as possible. Tickets are $75 per person, and include cocktails and the Silent Auction, followed by a team dinner and the Live Auction. Remember, if you have been invited to sit with friends at a reserved table, you will still need to purchase tickets to the auction. Click here to make your reservation online: https://stpeds.ejoinme.org/?tabid=337897

If you did not get a chance to pick up your auction catalog at conferences last week, please check your oldest child’s backpack – they will be bringing it home today. Check out the great Live and Silent Auction items, and the sign-up parties! You can sign up NOW for class, teacher or premium sign-up parties - click here to register online: https://stpeds.ejoinme.org/?tabid=336041

The Game Plan -- At 6:00, the Silent Auction begins in the Multipurpose Room, where we’ll tailgate and bid on lots of great items. Promptly at 8:00, all Silent Auction tables will close (except Super Silent and Buy It Now) and guests will head to the gym, where there will be plenty of grade-level seating available. Maps located on the way into the gym will direct you to those tables. You won’t want to miss the Live Auction, or the kick-off entertainment and half-time games, including the slideshow, the heads or tails game where you can win $500 and much, much more. Super Silent and Buy It Now bid sheets will move to the west wall of the gym, and will close when the Live Auction ends.

Check out the Super Silent, Class Art and Live Auction items at www.stpaulsauction.com.

Parking -- Parking for the auction will be available in the St. Paul’s lot, on the surrounding streets and in the Community Blood Center lot. Security guards will be on-hand.

Slam Dunk for St. Paul’s -- Please support this year’s Fund-a-Need project: exciting improvements to the playing field that will allow for more outdoor play and exercise for our children! Through Fund-a-Need, you can contribute directly to this project that will enhance our kids’ physical development and well-being. The project will be completed in three phases, depending on the amount of funds raised:

· Phase 1 – One-tenth mile asphalt walking/jogging track ($18,000)

· Phase 2 – Basketball half-court, including four square lines ($12,000)

· Phase 3 – Four-seat swing set ($8,000 to $12,000)

These improvements will provide more options at recess and PE classes for boys and girls of all ages, will offer alternative play space for crowded playgrounds, will allow for a place for siblings to play during games and practices, and will allow for future expansion.

With your help, we can hit our goal! Click here to donate to Fund-a-Need online: https://stpeds.ejoinme.org/?tabid=336071

The weekend of Mar. 29-Apr. 1, twelve students and Mrs. Reynolds attended a Spanish immersion program at El Lago de Bosque near Bemidji, MN. The students participated in many activities, all conducted in Spanish, ate authentic Spanish cuisine at every meal, and engaged in conversation with the counselors, many of whom were native speakers. Although the seventh graders were the youngest students present, they still received three Super-Español awards for speaking only Spanish for half a day. Drake R. also received an award from one of the counselors for making great effort to speak the target language with both counselors and other campers. Attendees were: Lauren Mc., Rachael S., Abria A., Haley B., Ashley B., Monty L., Cora M., Caroline Mc., A’Starr M., Drake R., Danny T., and Sydney W.

Calling all buddy families for the 2012-13 school year: Buddy Family Orientation will be held on Wednesday, April 18th at 8:30 am in the North MPR. Please let Miriam Zavagnin know if you are unable to attend.

Join us for “Friday the 13th Fun” in extended day!
Creepy snacks will be enjoyed and games like Mafia, Clue, and Doctor vs. Virus will be played. No need to sign up - just come join us at carpool time, and your day will be a little luckier.
